The Tangier Photo Meetings

From a pioneering event to the creation of a permanent Mediterranean academy

La mer Méditerranée vue depuis Tanger

The Rencontres Photo de Tanger were born of the need to broaden facing the sea perspectives, break the isolation of Mediterranean creators, and rebalance the flow of visual narratives between the North and the South.

The aim is to make photography an instrument of emancipation, intercultural dialogue, and social justice across the shores of the Mediterranean.

The History of the Rencontres Photo de Tanger

From a pioneering event in Tangier to the creation of a permanent Mediterranean Academy

Founders: Mina Mostefa & Wilfrid Estève

Founded in 2019 by Mina Mostefa and Wilfrid Estève, the Photo Meetings emerged in Tangier from on-the-ground observations and a desire for action: to create a structured professional hub on the shores of the Strait, dedicated to visual artists from the Mediterranean region.

While Tangier has long been a major artistic and intellectual crossroads, emerging artists in the region too often faced a lack of resources for economic integration, professional development, and direct access to international distribution networks.

From the outset, Face à la mer Photo Meetings were conceived not merely as an exhibition event, but as an operational platform designed to break down this isolation through mentoring, grants, and professional knowledge transfer.

Right from the inaugural 2019 edition, the event established the foundations of its approach: bringing together key players from the visual arts ecosystem—such as publishers, curators, programming directors, and agencies—in Tangier to engage with a selection of creators working directly in the field.

From this initial stage, the Rencontres Photo de Tanger affirmed their commitment by supporting and rewarding rigorous documentary work that seeks to address the complexities of contemporary realities with ethics, precision, and independence.

The years 2020 and 2021 marked a pivotal period for consolidating the methodology.

Faced with travel restrictions and global health disruptions, the event chose to focus its activities on its core mission: rigorous professional guidance and genuine human mentorship.

Working sessions brought together authors selected via an open call for in-depth portfolio reviews, personalized editing workshops, and forums for professional exchange, thereby enhancing the impact of our awards and creative grants.

In 2022, the Photo Meetings reached a new milestone in its local integration by choosing to occupy public spaces directly.

By rolling out an open-air program visible to everyone around the clock, the Rencontres reaffirmed the civic purpose of imagery: reaching audiences where they are, demystifying access to contemporary artistic forms, and bringing documentary storytelling into the very heart of the city.

This edition also strengthened post-festival support measures by introducing grants for certified training and providing tailored follow-up for the award winners.

RENCONTRES PHOTO DE TANGER

“Making photography an instrument of emancipation, intercultural dialogue, and social justice across the shores of the Mediterranean.“

Since 2023, the Tangier-based event has confirmed its status as a lasting springboard for talent.

In 2024 and 2025, the initiative continued to unfold over the long term, combining individual mentoring, the promotion of creative approaches, and integration into commissioning and publishing networks.

At the same time, the activities have extended beyond Tangier through the development of trans-Mediterranean connections, off-site initiatives, and media literacy programs for young people in both Morocco and France.

Building on years of work in the field, the Tangier Photo Meetings are now reaching a pivotal moment in its history by fundamentally rethinking its model.

Recognizing that the brief timeframe of a festival is no longer sufficient to provide a lasting solution to the precarious situation of authors or to strengthen the autonomy of Mediterranean writing, the Tangier event is becoming the foundation for a broader ambition:
– the creation of an Academy.

LEARN MORE ABOUT THE ACADEMY
